Apps like PHHHOTO

PHHHOTO (2014–2017) is gone. Here's how to make its moving pictures now

PHHHOTO was the app for instant moving pictures: tap once, get a looping GIF of the moment, share it on a feed with your friends. It shut down in June 2017. The closest thing to it now is PHHHOTOS - REVIVED, a free fan remake for iPhone that rebuilds the camera, the loops, the filters, the feed and #WOW.

PHHHOTOS - REVIVED

A remake of the whole app, not just the effect: the same 5-frame burst and back-and-forth loop, DAZE and SOLO matched to the original, PHHHOTO's lost filters recreated, TXT, ZZZOOM and TRAILSSS, plus a feed, likes, comments, #WOW and profiles on the web. New things too: RAW, film looks, limited-time filters and DMs. Free, invite only, installed with SideStore. All the features.

Boomerang

Instagram's looping-video camera, launched in 2015. It loops video rather than a handful of frames, so it looks smoother and less like a PHHHOTO, and it has no PHHHOTO filters or feed of its own. How they compare.

Live Photos

Built into the iPhone camera. In Photos you can set a Live Photo to Loop or Bounce, which gives a looping clip, but there are no PHHHOTO-style filters, captions or feed.

GIF makers

Apps that turn videos or a set of photos into GIFs can get close to the look, but take several steps where PHHHOTO took one tap. More on GIF camera apps.
